From the Principal

Several years ago I met with our Director of Music, Paul Kinsella to discuss future directions and he spoke about a Music Tour. He was keen that this first ever Music Tour should celebrate the roots of the College and its early formation, so the selection of Ireland was a deliberate one.  Paul wished to combine music performance with a spiritual experience in the Mercy tradition. From these discussions several years ago, the dream is now a reality and the Ireland Tour will be repeated in the future.

Mission

Last Friday 6 March, the Year 10 Reflection Day was held to launch the Mercy Service Learning Program. This compulsory program is undertaken by all Year 10 students and involves each student committing to fifteen hours of service in a not-for-profit organisation. Whilst a compulsory program, it is very much a practical manifestation of our Gospel values, which the content of the Reflection Day explored.

Curriculum

In the past few weeks Parent Information Evenings have been held for both Year 11 and Year 12 Parents. The Year 10 Parent Evening is held in Term 2 to assist with subject selection. A key point of discussion was study tips for Senior School. Establishing good routines early in the year is crucial to assist all students but particularly Senior School students, to achieve success with their studies. We encourage all parents to discuss the following recommendations for study in Years 10 - 12 with their daughters as exams for Senior School take place in Term 2.

Junior School 

Public Speaking On Tuesday evening, 10 March, Year 6 students competed in the Interhouse Public Speaking competition. The sixteen students, two from each House were involved in weeks of planning for the speeches on the following topics: Icing on the Cake, I Don’t Believe it! or It’s hard being Green.

Middle School

Year 7 leadership application forms and the leadership job descriptions were emailed to all Year 7 students while they were on camp. Please ensure your daughter has read through the job description carefully and then if she is keen to be a leader, ensure she completes the application form and hands it in on or before the due date of Monday 16 March by 4.00 pm (no late application forms will be accepted).

Senior School 

As the year unfolds we continue to grow and develop our Mercy Wellbeing with contributions from both staff and students. The Year 10 Positive Education Program is based on the Twenty Four Strengths, and teaches students to identify and use their top five strengths to work on achieving the best outcome in all aspect of school and life, and to work on improving their other strengths.  Homeroom teachers focus on a different strength each week such as curiosity, persistence, putting it in perspective, social intelligence and mindfulness.

Boarding

The girls returned refreshed and relaxed from the exeat weekend and it was good to be able to catch up with families as you collected and returned your daughters to the College. The extra days were a good opportunity for staff within the Boarding School to participate in the College Professional Learning undertaken on the two days.
