Sara Ouwendyk (Year 10, Byrne) has danced since the age of 2, but began to take it seriously when she commenced her vocational ballet training whilst in Junior School. From Years 6 – 8 Sara missed half a day each week to focus on her ballet training. During Year 9 and 10 Sara missed school every Tuesday to focus on ballet, she also successfully auditioned for a place in the WA Ballet company’s Masterclass Program both years. This required a large amount of organisation and diligent homework and study for Sara to keep up with her school work. During this time Sara also completed Certificates 1, 2 and 3 in classical ballet through the Australian Dance Institute. In Year 10 Sara completed seven major Dance exams all with distinction, four of which are endorsed programs for WACE. She was also awarded the Gable Williams Trophy for best public performance in the Dorothy Gladstone Awards in WA this year, as well as the Claire Marshal Trophy for National Dance at the 2015 RAD festival. After submitting her application and resume Sara was offered an audition for WAAPA earlier this term. The audition itself was approximately 5 1/2 hours. Sara had to participate in a classical ballet class, contemporary dance class and pointe class. After the audition applicants were interviewed. Following a tense two week wait, Sara received notice that her audition has been successful. In order for her to be accepted she must meet ECU’s strict academic entrance requirement which includes Year 10 graduation and band 8 NAPLAN. Fortunately all of Sara’s hard work at both school and ballet have come together as she is on track to graduate Year 10 and accept her place in the Diploma of Elite Performance in Classical Ballet at WAAPA.
We wish Sara every success in her Ballet future.
